Desk edge cable clip, made to measure

Measure how thick your desk top is and how thick your cable (or bundle of cables) is, choose how many channels you want, and we will cut a clip for that desk. It slides over the edge of the desk top, and the cables push in sideways through a narrow opening into round channels on the outside. It prints lying flat, with no supports.

What you need before you start

What it will take

  • Desk top thickness: 8–60 mm
  • Cable or bundle diameter: 3–20 mm
  • Number of channels: 4 to choose from
  • Clip width along the edge: 8–40 mm
  • Nozzle size: 4 to choose from
  • Filament: 4 to choose from

As it comes

Slot for the desk top25.4 mm
Each channel, across6.5 mm
Opening into each channel4.5 mm
Filament, at most (printed solid)9 g

Build plate: 34 mm as it comes, never more than 256 mm.

What you need to hand

  • A calliper for the thickness of the desk top, at the edge where the clip will go.
  • A calliper (or a ruler) across your thickest cable, or across the bundle that will share a channel.
  • How many channels you want, from one to four.
  • Your nozzle size and the filament you will print it in.
Your desk

Measure the desk top at the edge where the clip will go, from its top face to its underside.

Your cables

Across the thickest cable you will put in, or across a bundle held together the way it will sit. Every channel is the same size.

Across the cable at its thickest — or, for a bundle that goes through one channel, across the bundle held together the way it will sit. Each channel is sized from this.
How many separate channels, stacked one above the other on the outside of the clip. Each takes one cable or bundle of the diameter above.
The clip

How wide the clip is along the edge of the desk.

How wide the clip is along the edge of the desk. It is also how high it stands on the build plate, since it prints lying flat.
The printer it will come off

Set these to the nozzle you will print with and the filament you will use; what is filled in is only our usual setting, not necessarily yours. The nozzle decides whether the walls come out at least two lines thick. The filament does not change the model: it only sets the weight estimate.

Finer adjustments
mm
How far the two jaws reach in over the top and under the desk from its edge. If there is a rail or a frame under the desk near the edge, keep this shorter than the gap to it.
mm
How much wider than the desk top the slot of the clip is drawn. Looser slides on more easily and moves about more.
mm
How much wider than the cable each channel is drawn. Looser lets the cable slide along the channel more freely.
