Levelling wedge or shim, made to measure

Measure the gap under the foot of a cabinet, a table or a machine at both ends of where the wedge will sit, and we draw a wedge that climbs from one height to the other — or a flat shim if the two are the same. It prints flat side down with no supports.

What you need before you start

What it will take

  • Height at the thin end: 1–40 mm
  • Height at the thick end: 1–60 mm
  • Width: 10–150 mm
  • Length: 15–300 mm
  • Nozzle size: 5 to choose from
  • Filament: 4 to choose from

As it comes

Height at the thin end2 mm
Height at the thick end8 mm
Slope of the top5.7 °
Length60 mm

Build plate: 60 mm as it comes, never more than 256 mm.

What you need to hand

  • The gap under the foot at both ends of where the wedge will sit — a calliper's depth rod, or a stack of coins measured afterwards.
  • Roughly how wide the foot is, and how long you want the wedge.
  • Your nozzle size and the filament you will print it in.
The gap you are filling

Measure the gap where the thin end will sit and where the thick end will sit. Give the same figure twice for a flat shim.

How tall the wedge is at its thin end. Measure the gap where the thin end will sit — with a calliper's depth rod, or a stack of feeler gauges or coins measured afterwards.
mm
How tall the wedge is at its thick end. Give the same figure as the thin end for a flat shim.
The wedge

A little wider than the foot it goes under. A longer wedge climbs more gently for the same two heights.

mm
Across the wedge, side to side. Make it a little wider than the foot it goes under.

The printer it will come off

Set these to the nozzle you will print with and the filament you will use; what is filled in is only our usual setting. The nozzle decides whether the thin end comes out as enough layers to print. The filament does not change the model.

Only a note on where each filament suits. It does not change the model.
