End cap for a tube or pipe, made to measure

Measure the end of your tube with a calliper and choose a plug that pushes into it or a cap that slides over it. We draw the fit from your figure with the clearance you pick, so it goes on by hand, and the cap prints top down with no supports.

What you need before you start

What it will take

  • Which kind of cap: 2 to choose from
  • Inside diameter of the tube (0 if not measured): 0–110 mm
  • Outside diameter of the tube (0 if not measured): 0–115 mm
  • How far it goes onto or into the tube: 5–40 mm
  • Nozzle size: 5 to choose from
  • Filament: 4 to choose from

As it comes

Fit diameter as drawn (plug outside, or cap bore)19.70 mm
Clearance left if the print comes out tight0.10 mm
Outside diameter of the cap26.0 mm
Height, top included14.4 mm

Build plate: 26 mm as it comes, never more than 256 mm.

What you need to hand

  • A calliper for the end of the tube: the inside diameter for a plug, the outside diameter for a cap (or both, for a plug with a flush head).
  • How far the plug should go in, or the cap go on.
  • Your nozzle size and the filament you will print it in.

Plug or cap

A plug pushes into the open end and leaves the outside of the tube as it was; a cap slides over the outside and hides the cut edge.

Inside: a plug that pushes into the end of the tube, with a head that sits on its rim. Outside: a cap that slides over the end of the tube.
Your tube

Measure with a calliper, near the end, in two directions at right angles. A plug needs the inside diameter; a cap needs the outside one. Leave the one you do not need at 0 — or give both, and a plug gets a head flush with the tube.

mm
Measure across the inside of the tube's mouth with the jaws of a calliper, in two directions at right angles, and give the smaller figure. An inside plug is sized from it. Leave it at 0 for an outside cap if you have not measured it.
mm
Measure across the outside of the tube near its end with a calliper, in two directions at right angles, and give the larger figure. An outside cap is sized from it; on an inside plug it makes the head flush with the tube. Leave it at 0 if you have not measured it.
The cap

How far it reaches onto or into the tube. How snug the fit is drawn and how thick the top is are under Finer adjustments.

mm
The length of tube the cap covers (outside) or the length of the plug inside the tube (inside).
The printer it will come off

Set these to the nozzle you will print with and the filament you will use; what is filled in is only our usual setting. The nozzle decides whether the walls and the top come out the thickness we drew. The filament does not change the model.

Only a note on where each filament suits. It does not change the model.
Finer adjustments
mm
How much looser than the tube we draw the fit, across the diameter. The smallest setting gives the snuggest fit we will send out; more goes on more easily and holds less.
mm
The flat top of the cap. Thicker is stiffer and takes longer to print.
