Drain cover, made to measure

Measure the opening of your drain with a calliper or a ruler — across a round one, side to side on a square one — and we draw a cover for it, with a grid of small holes or straight slots. A short collar underneath drops into the opening and keeps the cover centred, and a rim rests on the floor around it. It prints upside down with no supports.

What you need to hand

  • A calliper or a ruler for the opening of the drain: across a round one, side to side on a square one.
  • How far the collar can drop into the opening, if you want one.
  • Your nozzle size and the filament you will print it in.
Your drain

Measure the opening the cover goes into, at its top edge: across a round one, side to side on a square one. Measure in two directions and give the smaller figure.

Round or square, as the opening in the floor is.

The cover

How far the collar reaches in, how far the rim reaches over the floor, and the holes. The bars between the holes and how snug the collar is are under Finer adjustments.

mm
A short collar under the cover that drops into the opening and keeps the cover centred. Set 0 for a flat cover that only rests on the floor.
mm
How far the cover reaches past the opening on every side, resting on the floor.
mm
The flat plate with the holes in it. Thicker is stiffer and takes longer to print.
A grid of small holes, or straight parallel slots.
mm
Across the corners of each hole, or across each slot. Smaller keeps more out of the drain; larger lets more through.
The printer it will come off

Set these to the nozzle you will print with and the filament you will use; what is filled in is only our usual setting. The nozzle decides whether the bars and the plate come out the thickness we drew. The filament does not change the model.

Only a note on where each filament suits. It does not change the model.

mm
How much smaller than the opening we draw the collar, across. More drops in more easily and centres less closely.
