Hex key stand, made to measure

Pick your set of hex keys and how loose you like them, and we draw a block with a hexagonal hole for every key, smallest to largest, each one sized from the key across its flats with the clearance you choose. The keys stand upright, short arm on top, and the block prints flat with no supports.

What you need before you start

What it will take

  • Your set of keys: 5 to choose from
  • Depth of the holes: 8–40 mm
  • Nozzle size: 5 to choose from
  • Filament: 4 to choose from

As it comes

Holes, one per key9

Width of the block18.0 mm
Height of the block22.4 mm

Build plate: 76 mm as it comes, never more than 256 mm.

What you need to hand

  • Your set of hex keys, to pick the matching set from the list.
  • How far you want the keys to go in.
  • Your nozzle size and the filament you will print it in.
Your keys

Pick the set that matches yours; the sizes are listed with each one. Every key gets its own hole, smallest on the left.

The stand

How far the keys go in. The clearance, the walls between the holes and the floor are under Finer adjustments.

mm
How far each key goes down into the stand. The long arm goes in; the short arm stays on top, where you can grab it.
The printer it will come off

Set these to the nozzle you will print with and the filament you will use; what is filled in is only our usual setting. The nozzle decides whether the walls and the floor come out the thickness we drew. The filament does not change the model.

Only a note on where each filament suits. It does not change the model.
Finer adjustments
mm
How much wider than the key we draw each hole, across the flats. More lets the key drop in more easily and leaves it leaning a little more.
mm
The plastic left between neighbouring holes and around the edge. More spreads the keys out and makes the stand longer.
mm
The solid floor under the holes. Thicker is stiffer and takes longer to print.
