Spool hub adapter, made to measure

Measure the hole through the middle of your spool, how long that hole is, and the axle or holder you want it to turn on, and we will cut a ring that fills the gap: its outside fits your spool and its middle fits your axle, each with a little clearance. A rim on the outside rests against the side of the spool so the adapter cannot slide in; you can leave it off. Two adapters, one in each side, hold the spool square — you print the same file twice. It prints standing on its rim, with no supports.

What you need before you start

What it will take

  • Spool centre hole, across: 20–120 mm
  • Spool width at the hole: 15–150 mm
  • Axle or holder, across: 5–100 mm
  • One adapter or two: 2 to choose from
  • Rim on the outside: 2 to choose from
  • Nozzle size: 5 to choose from
  • Filament: 4 to choose from

Filament per adapter, at most (printed solid)22 g

Build plate: 65 mm as it comes, never more than 256 mm.

What you need to hand

  • A calliper with inside jaws for the hole through the middle of your spool, and a ruler or calliper for how long that hole is.
  • A calliper for the axle, rod or holder the spool will turn on.
  • Your nozzle size and the filament you will print it in.

Drawn from the numbers in the form below, off the same geometry the file is cut from. It is not a photograph, and there is no photograph — every part that leaves here is a different size.

Your spool

Measure the hole through the middle with the inside jaws of a calliper, in two directions, and use the smaller figure. The width is the length of that hole, face to face.

What it turns on

The rod, tube or holder the spool will sit on, measured across where the spool sits.

The adapter

Two adapters, one in each side, hold the spool square; one suits a holder that already holds the other side. The rim keeps the adapter from sliding into the spool.

Two adapters, one pushed into each side of the spool, hold it square on the axle; you print the same file twice. One adapter suits a holder that already holds the other side.
A rim 5 mm wider than the hole all round, which rests against the side of the spool so the adapter cannot slide in. Without it the adapter is a plain sleeve.
The printer it will come off

Set these to the nozzle you will print with and the filament you will use; what is filled in is only our usual setting. The nozzle decides whether the walls come out the thickness we drew. The filament does not change the model: it only sets the weight estimate.

Finer adjustments
mm
The length of the part that sits inside the spool hole. With two adapters, each one goes this far in from its own side, and the two must not meet in the middle.
mm
How much smaller than the spool hole we draw the outside of the adapter. Looser goes in more easily, but the spool can sit a little off centre.
mm
How much wider than the axle we draw the hole in the middle. Looser turns more freely, with more play.

More for the workshop

  1. Desiccant core

A silica-gel core for the hole in your spool, cut to the spool and to the beads you bought.

What you need A calliper for the hole in the middle of the spool and the width of the spool beside it, and the bead size on your bag of silica gel.

  2. Remaining-filament gauge

A flat gauge that reads the grams and metres left on your spool, with a scale worked out from your spool.

What you need A ruler or calliper for an empty spool, a new one and its label, and your nozzle size.

  3. Reducing bushing

A sleeve that fits your shaft into a bigger hole, cut to both sizes, with an optional flange.

What you need A calliper for the shaft and the hole, and how far into the hole it goes.
